The PSNI have launched a murder investigation after the discovery of the body of 22-year-old Mary Ward in Belfast on 1 October.

Murder investigation launched after fourth woman murdered in Northern Ireland in past 6 weeks

22-year-old Mary Ward was found dead by police at her home in Belfast on Tuesday 1 October.

The PSNI have launched a murder investigation following the death of a woman in Belfast.

Mary Ward, aged 22-years-old, was found dead by police at her home on Melrose Street on Tuesday 1 October.

Mary Ward is the fourth woman murdered in Northern Ireland in the past 6 weeks. PSNI Detective Chief Superintendent Lindsay Fisher commented, saying: "This is absolutely appalling. Four families have been shattered forever by meaningless violence". 

She added: "We are absolutely determined that we will be relentless in our pursuit of the perpetrators".

In regards to the investigation into the death of Mary Ward, the PSNI said: "Following extensive investigations by detectives in Serious Crime Branch, a murder investigation has been launched".

The PSNI said they are keen to speak to anyone who may have seen or been in contact with Mary Ward on or around Wednesday 25 September - believed to be that last time she was seen alive. 

Due to the prior engagement between the 22-year-old and the PSNI, the case has also been referred to the Office of the Police Ombudsman.

The PSNI said: "Whilst at this time there is no suggestion of individual criminality or misconduct, we are nonetheless concerned about our organisational response".
