Offaly man charged with cultivating cannabis plants

The court heard that each plant was worth €800.

A 48 year old Tullamore man was charged with cultivating plants “of the genus cannabis” during last week's sitting of the District Court.

Wayne Sheeran, Colehill, Cappincur, Tullamore was charged with committing the offence on the 2nd of March, 2025 at his premises in Colehill.

Sergeant Richard Thornton told the court that the Guards called to Sheeran's home at 1.30pm and executed a search warrant “during which they found 8 cannabis plants being cultivated, each plant worth €800, totalling €6,400.”

The defending solicitor Aisling Maloney pointed out that her client had no previous convictions and had cooperated fully with the Gardaí. She said her client is “a very mild-mannered man. He also works full-time.” She handed in two work references for the Judge to read. She added that Sheeran was faced with significant health issues and was cultivating the cannabis plants to deal with his medical problems. She stressed that the plants were solely for his own use.

Judge Andrew Cody adjourned the case to March the 25th next and asked for a Probation Officer's report on that date, as well as a Community Service assessment. He also ordered that Sheeran return clean urine samples on a monthly basis between now and March 25.
