Birr man Mick Egan. Mick is looking for the public's support this Friday in Super Valu Birr.
BIRR man Michael Egan is taking part in a sky dive this September to raise funds for Youth Suicide Prevention.
"This Sky Dive is happening in the first weekend of September," said the adventurous Birr man. "It is for all the residents of Offaly, and its aim is to raise funds for Youth Suicide Prevention. My aim is to raise awareness amongst the general public about this problem as well as raising awareness of the need for direct training in our schools.
"The minimum amount required is 600 Euros but I am hoping to raise 1,000 Euros."
Mick will be holding an open day in Buckley's - Supervalu, Birr this Friday 28th of June looking for donations / sponsorship towards his goal.
"I would love to see as many people as possible calling over to me in the supermarket, even if it's just to wish me luck in my 'Jump'."
There's also a link/campaign page:- https://skydive.yspi.ie
/shilealeigh for direct online donations.
Mick also has some sponsorship cards at Butler's Haven Pharmacy, Aidan Horan's shop, Newbridge St, Nolan's Pub, Declan Phelan's clothing outlet and Mulrooney's Gala on Railway Road.
Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland (YSPI) points out that every 500 Euros raised for it allows three hundred more students to receive mental health awareness and suicide training directly in their schools.
YSPI points out that youth mental health is a critical issue that demands our attention and open dialogue.
"In today's fast-paced and often high-pressure society," states a YSPI press release, "we are all facing unique challenges that can significantly impact our mental well-being. From the pressures of social media to the expectations set by academic and personal achievements, the mental health landscape, particularly for young people, is complex and multifaceted.
“Acknowledging and talking about these challenges is the first step towards empowering ourselves to seek help and support. It's crucial to create safe spaces where we feel heard and understood, where our concerns are not minimized, but rather addressed with empathy and concern.
"Engaging in conversations about mental health not only raises awareness but also breaks down the stigmas associated with mental health issues. By openly discussing these topics, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for ourselves and others to thrive. It's important to recognise that mental health is just as important as physical health and deserves the same level of care and attention. Resources, education, and accessible support systems are essential in helping us all to navigate our mental health journeys. We must commit to continuous dialogue and action to ensure the well-being of our minds, paving the way for a healthier, more resilient mental landscape."
This is Mick's second major fundraising endeavour. In July 2022 he raised €1,715 for Focus Ireland when he took part in a charity ride and walk.
Upset by the never-ending homeless crisis, Mick decided to try and do something about it. He therefore signed up to take part in a charity bike ride and walk from Birr to Sligo which raised funds to go towards helping Focus Ireland in their very important work of tackling the scourge of homelessness in our society.
