Just a few of those attending the Big Sweep in Roscrea. Many more turned up after the photo was taken.
WEDNESDAY June 11th marked a very special occasion for Roscrea Tidy Towns. It was the evening of their annual “Big Sweep” – an exercise undertaken for many years to clear the Roscrea streets of litter, leaves, butts and dust etc in preparation for the judging in the National Tidy Towns Competition.
It is difficult to understand the extent of litter on our streets with programmes such as Green Flags in schools, the constant mentioning of environmental matters on radio and television and the availability of litter bins, bring centres and bottle banks as well as the major stores having waste recycling bins in-house.
As part of the exercise, they are usually joined by a few enthusiastic members of the public as well as members from Roscrea Lions Club. This year, they have been joined by not only those already mentioned, but also International Protection Applicants from both Racket Hall and Corville House.
A wonderful evening’s work was completed, with most of the main streets of the town getting a great tidying up.
When the numbers who attended Wednesday’s “Big Sweep” were counted, the total number was over 70!
Roscrea Tidy Towns would like to thank everyone who attended the Big Sweep in such large numbers. There were some forty-five IPA helpers and over sixteen members of Roscrea Lions Club together with Tidy Towns members in attendance.
Roscrea Tidy Towns would ask members of the public and businesses to be very litter conscious from now on as judging time in the competition is underway. They are not informed as to when they are being judged – the judges, unlike the cuckoo, never announce their arrival but like the cuckoo are very hard to spot!
