People left baffled over 'something weird' spotted in the sky over Offaly

Some people were left confused over some "weird" lights in the sky over Tullamore last week.

The curious lights were spotted above O'Connor Square in Tullamore and captured in photographs taken and posted by Offaly Libraries.

The library service took to Facebook with the pictures and issued a call out for explanations.

They posted: "On the evening Donal Ryan visited Tullamore Library for Ireland Reads, we captured this photo from outside and on later inspection noticed something weird in the sky. Any thoughts on what it might be Astronomy Ireland? And since it's Irish Astronomy Week, perhaps some budding astronomers could share their views below too please."

A number of people were quick to respond and it appears the mystery may have been under the snapper's nose all along.

John Flannery responded: "Both circled objects look like they are internal reflections in the phone camera’s lens of the bright street lights. Zooming in on the lower circled object you can see the two strips of the LED bulbs. Venus is the bright point-like “star” to the left of the light in the main photo."

Seanie Morris added: "I agree with John Flannery, it looks like internal lens flaring or reflection."
