Dog owners in Offaly could face criminal prosecution as Gardaí issue stark warning

Gardaí in Offaly have issued a stark warning to dog owners in Offaly as lambing season begins from February through to April.

In a post on Facebook, Gardaí said it's more important than ever to make sure dogs are kept on a lease and under control to prevent sheep from worrying.

The stress induced in a sheep from loos or our of control dog can be devastating to flocks, causing death and miscarriages in ewes and leaving lambs orphaned.

they also warned that dog owners can face criminal prosecution and financial liability if their pets harm any livestock.

An Garda Síochána is urging the public to be aware, to keep dogs on a leash while out walking and to report any sightings of loose or stray dogs to prevent the death and stress of sheep.
