Kilcormac Sustainable Energy Community Launch
KILCORMAC Development Association (KDA) is thrilled to announce the successful grant application to the EU Just Transition fund, receiving a significant award of €294,056. This funding marks a major milestone in the transformation of Kilcormac into a pioneering hub for sustainable energy practices through the newly established Kilcormac Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence.
Located at Kilcormac Community and Enterprise Centre, the Centre of Excellence is set to incorporate advanced renewable energy systems including a roof-mounted Solar PV System, a Micro Hydropower Installation utilising the Silver River, Solar Carports with EV Charging Points, and a refurbished historical Mill Wheel. These initiatives are designed not only to harness Kilcormac's unique geographical and historical features but also to significantly reduce the community centre’s annual energy costs, presently over €18,000 per year.
With an expected reduction in energy costs by 70-80% per annum, the project will free up substantial financial resources, allowing for these savings to be reinvested into the community. This includes the creation of crucial positions such as Project Co-ordinators, Tour Guides, and Training Co-ordinators, enhancing job opportunities within Kilcormac.
“The financial liberation brought by these savings will enable us to fund further community projects, enhancing both our economic and social vitality,” said Linda Kelly, Project Manager for KDA. “We are setting a sustainable example that we hope will resonate well beyond our local community, aspiring towards a greener future.”
The Centre of Excellence will serve as a vital educational resource, offering renewable energy training courses aimed at equipping residents and students from local schools and colleges with the skills needed for the future green economy. Over 20,000 people utilise the Community Centre annually, and the project is poised to have a profound effect on various groups including local businesses, environmental organisations, and the general public.
While the grant is a substantial boost, the KDA faces the challenge of securing match funding to fully realise this ambitious project. Plans are underway for fundraisers later this year, and community support is crucial. “We are calling on everyone in our community to come forward and help us in this endeavour, ensuring that the benefits of this project will be felt by all,” added Linda Kelly.
This project is part of a broader strategy that includes the National Just Transition Tourism Recreation Hub project, expected to enhance Kilcormac’s role as a destination for eco-tourism and propel economic growth and sustainability.
Additionally, the KDA has taken a significant step towards sustainability by partnering with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) to establish Kilcormac as a Sustainable Energy Community. This initiative was officially launched on May 1st, reinforcing KDA's commitment to integrating sustainable practices throughout the town. The collaboration with SEAI marks a proactive approach to enhancing energy efficiency and promoting environmental stewardship in the community.
With the support of SEAI, the KDA will develop an Energy Master Plan for Kilcormac. This plan is designed to optimise energy usage and improve sustainability across various sectors, including residential homes, businesses, and community clubs. The development of this Energy Master Plan will help reduce energy costs and carbon footprints, offering substantial benefits to all stakeholders in Kilcormac. This initiative aligns with the broader goals of the Kilcormac Renewable Energy Centre of Excellence and contributes significantly to the community’s vision of becoming a model for sustainable development.
The KDA is a community-focused organisation dedicated to the social and economic development of Kilcormac. Through the integration of sustainable practices, the KDA aims to address the challenges of economic adaptation and ensure a prosperous future for the whole community.
