Forecaster warns of wintry conditions next week as jet stream shift to bring colder air
A leading weather forecaster is warning of a return of wintry conditions next week as a jet stream shift looks set to bring colder air.
With Met Eireann forecasting a mild if at times wet weekend, the weather looks set to shift again around the middle of next week.
According to Cathal Nolan of Ireland's Weather Channel, temperatures look set to fall away somewhat after midweek next week as a colder parcel of air pushes its way eastwards across the country.
He says this change in temperature is due to a southward shift in the jet stream, with a colder northwesterly airflow following thereafter. Showery conditions will develop after Wednesday with a risk of these showers turning wintry in some areas.
Western and northwestern areas are most at risk, with hail and sleet likely at all levels, but with a chance of snow above 150-200 metres or during overnight periods when temperatures drop.
In its latest forecast, Met Eireann says that current indications suggest that the latter part of next week will be cooler, still unsettled and breezy or windy at times too.
