RECENTLY the Alzheimer Information Bus visited Borrisokane where it was warmly welcomed by local librarian Noirin Duggan as the Library had secured the visit of the unit through Healthy Ireland.
The Mobile unit was set up following funding from the Peggy Mangan Foundation and it first went on the road in 2017 and has proved to be very popular in the community. Peggy Mangan died tragically in 2014, and her family set up the foundation in her honour. She lived in South Dublin, she had dementia and went for a walk with her dog one day and went missing, and her body was found near Ballymun a few days later. Anne-Marie Brophy Senior Executive Librarian, Library Services and Healthy Ireland at Your Library Co-ordinator with the Library Service welcomed the Alzheimer Information bus to Borrisokane library where it was parked up outside for the public to visit.
Anne-Marie said “as a trusted public service Tipperary County Council Library Service is very pleased to deliver the Healthy Ireland at Your Library programme, which establishes libraries as a valuable source within the community for health information. The aim of the programme is to contribute to improving the health, wellbeing, and overall quality of life of communities and individuals at all life stages. Our libraries are safe and welcoming places in the heart of the community, where individuals and groups are encouraged and supported to maintain, improve and manage their physical and mental health and wellbeing.
“Each library holds a dedicated Healthy Ireland at Your Library book collection, selected with expertise from the HSE, to inform and support you on all aspects of physical and mental health and wellbeing. There’s even more to choose from on BorrowBox, our dedicated eBook and eAudiobook app. Free to use for library members, on BorrowBox you can read or listen to thousands of books,” she said.
She went on to say that “Healthy Ireland at Your Library has seen our libraries' partner with health professionals and experts in the county, to deliver a programme of reputable, relevant and trustworthy health information events. From information sessions with Diabetes Ireland, healthy eating workshops, Pilates, and talks on children and sleep routine, the programme of events is wide and varied.”
Public libraries further support our health and wellbeing through the promotion of reading. ‘With comfortable browsing spaces, staff expertise to help you choose the right read for you, and lots to choose from, our libraries offer a social space to explore reading for pleasure,” says Ann Marie Brophy, Healthy Ireland at Your Library Co-ordinator with the Library Service.
“Reading has proven benefits for our health and wellbeing. Studies have shown that those who read for pleasure have higher levels of self-esteem and a greater ability to cope with difficult situations. Reading for pleasure was also associated with better sleeping patterns,” she said.
