FIANNA Fáil local election candidate Audrey Hennessy Kennedy has called for the swift introduction of local authority Disability Awareness Cards.
She said immediate action must be taken at a local level rather than waiting for instruction from the European Union.
The European Union is working towards implementing a universal disability card to enhance freedom of movement for people with disabilities.
"While the EU's initiative is a commendable step towards inclusivity, the timeline for its realisation is proving too lengthy," she said. "I am calling for the swift introduction of local authority disability awareness cards to address the urgent needs of people with disabilities within our community.
The proposed local authority disability awareness card aims to unify existing initiatives such as the JAM Card, the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, and the No Waiting Card.
The Fianna Fáil candidate for Birr LEA said that by consolidating these efforts, the council could provide a comprehensive tool that enables individuals with both visible and hidden disabilities to confidently signal their need for additional time, space, attention, or assistance in public settings.
"I am committed to representing people with disabilities and amplifying their voices and lived experiences if elected to Offaly County Council on June 7th. Everyone deserves to have equal access to services.
"I have always cared about giving disabled people's voices the megaphone they need and deserve. I remain committed to the task of furthering disability equity and inclusion so that we can make Offaly the best place to live for people with disabilities."
