A MAN driving an automatic car accidentally reversed when he attempted to accelerate and hit a car and wall in Tullamore, the local District Court was told.

The collision at High Street on April 26 last was recalled when Mohammed Auinul Islam (32), 19 High Street, Tullamore pleaded guilty to careless driving.

Sergeant James O'Sullivan said Mr Islam's car “shot backwards” across the road when he was attempting to park at about 9am and hit another car and also damaged a wall.

Judge Andrew Cody was told that €8,000 worth of damage was caused. Mr Islam was insured.

Defending solicitor Patrick Martin said his client was a 33-year-old Bangladeshi man whose wife was pregnant at the time and on the morning of the accident he was a little panicky.

Judge Cody imposed a fine of €200.
