Shane Lowry bows out of World Matchplay Championships after epic battle with Brooks Koepka
Shane Lowry has bowed out of the World Matchplay Championships in Texas after an epic battle with Brooks Koepka in his third and final round-robin match.
After a loss on the 17th to Harold Varner on Wednesday and a win on the last against Eric Van Rooyen on Thursday, Shane again went to the wire with four time Major Champion Koepka on Friday.
Koepka shot out of the blocks with three birdies in his first six holes to go three up taking full control of the match.
However Shane Lowry fought back brilliantly hitting three birdies in the next six holes to tie it up.
The two went toe to toe halving the next five holes to leave it all square and all to play for going down the last.
Both players were off target with their tee shots with Shane finding the fairway bunker and Koepka missing the fairway well to the left. Both found the green in two with Shane 23 feet away and his American opponent inside ten feet.
Shane needed to sink his putt to pressure his opponent but it just slipped by with Kopeka rolling in his putt to claim the victory.
And there was some good banter between the two after the final putt dropped in.
Koepka advances to the last 16 while Shane's tournament now over after three hard fought battles.
Meanwhile Seamus Power has advanced to the last 16 after topping his group.
