DISGRACEFUL - Dozens of wine bottles dumped in ditch at side of road in Offaly
The dumping of wine bottles in a ditch on the outskirts of Edenderry has caused disgust among locals.
Fine Gael councillor for the town, Noel Cribbin, told us at the weekend that he was "fuming" when he pulled up after noticing bottles strew in a ditch near Cloncannon outside the town.
"I was flabbergasted when I walked alongside the ditch and counted dozens of the same wine bottles in this 100-yard stretch," he commented.
"Only last year a group of residents in the Cloncannon area carried out a litter pick and the same wine bottles dumped in an area close by.
"It’s unreal that this person can think it’s ok to destroy our lovely countryside whilst this same person can discard their empties for free by bringing them down to bottle banks at the recycling centre in Edenderry," he added.
Cllr Cribbin says he has requested CCTV cameras from the local litter warden in the area to combat this sort of illegal dumping.
"It's my intention to catch the culprit and let the law deal with them. Indiscriminate dumping is spoiling our countryside and I intend to use the council’s resources to its maximum to catch the culprits and stamp it out," Cllr Cribbin concluded.
