'Significant delays' as rush hour train collides with herd of cows in Offaly

Irish Rail are warning of "significant delays" to services through Offaly after the 15:35 Heuston to Galway train collided with a herd of cows at Meeleghan's level crossing, near Tullamore this afternoon.

A number of cows were killed in the incident but no injuries have been reported onboard the train, which is stopped at the site.

Irish Rail have said workers are on site in an effort to clear the line and a relief train arrived to carry the 15:35 passengers to their destination shortly after 6pm. That train will not depart for some time.

Delays are expected for all services from Heuston to Galway and Westport will be significantly delayed for the evening.

The Offaly Express understands that at least four cows have been killed in the incident.

Iarnród Éireann has apologised for the inconvenience.
