Repair work has taken place in Tullamore this afternoon after a fire left homes and businesses around the town without power.

Emergency services were called on Thursday afternoon after an ESB pole transformer caught fire on High Street, knocking power to businesses. It's understood the top of the pole caught fire shortly before 1pm.

A number of customers had to be turned away as the businesses affected worked to find out the cause of the fault.

Offaly Fire & Rescue Services have confirmed the fire to the Offaly Express and a source told us that Tullamore Fire Brigade has now dealt with the blaze.

ESB workers arrived at the scene at 1.20pm, and the ESB Networks have told the Offaly Express that, "Power has been restored to anyone that lost supply."
