Court hears Offaly man 'who was going to the shop' was passenger in stolen car

An Offaly man pleaded guilty to being knowingly transported in a stolen car, during last week's sitting of Tullamore District Court.

Forty-five year old David Kearney from 10, Grove Street, Crinkle, Birr was arrested by the gardai on the night of June 19 last on Military Road, Crinkle.

Sergeant Richard Thornton told the court that the Gardaí were operating a checkpoint on Military Road when the stolen car, which had been stolen in Thurles two days beforehand, approached. There were three men inside, including the defendant. The male driver in the car tried to flee the scene but was quickly apprehended.

The defending solicitor Patrick Martin told the court that his client was a single, unemployed man and was a passenger in the vehicle.

Judge Andrew Cody asked what the three men were doing with the car.

“It was hardly a sightseeing tour that they were on,” he remarked. He asked what Mr Kearney had said in his Garda statement. Sgt Thornton commented that in the statement Mr Kearney said he was “going to the shop.”

The Judge remanded on continuing bail to February 18 next and asked for a Probation Report and a Community Service suitability report on that date.
