Driver of vehicle burned in accidental Offaly fire had no insurance

A MAN who did not appear before Tullamore District Court was banned from driving for two years for having no insurance.

John Ryan (65), The Lough, Toomevara, Tipperary, was summonsed for committing the offence at Clonlisk, Shinrone on December 9 last year.

Garda Brendan Mulvey gave evidence that at 6pm on that date gardai were informed that a vehicle was on fire at Clonlisk.

The fire brigade put out the fire, which had started accidentally and Mr Ryan produced his driving licence at the scene.

No certificate of insurance was produced, Garda Mulvey said, saying the accused man had 10 previous convictions for road traffic offences.

The most recent one was in January 2021 when he was convicted and fined €250 for fraudulent use of a number plate.

In 2016 he was convicted of having no tax displayed and in 2012 he was convicted of dangerous driving and was fined €500.

In addition to the two-year driving ban, Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €1,000.
