Two men have appeared in court charged with assaulting another man and being armed with a homemade walking stick during a violent feud related incident in Longford town on Tuesday.
Johnny Meares (56) and Christy Meares (23) both of 1 Grange Crescent, Mullingar, Co Westmeath appeared at a special sitting of Carrick-on-Shannon District Court on Wednesday following an incident at Main Street, Longford on Tuesday.
Both men were charged with assault causing harm to another man as well as possessing a homemade walking stick during the course of a violent public order incident shortly after 4pm.
Two cars were also damaged in the violent incident which is believed to be linked to a simmering row involving two locally based families.
It’s believed one of the cars involved ran into the back of the second car at a busy pedestrian crossing.
It's also believed a weapon may also have been produced during the course of the brawl which took place just yards from Longford Courthouse which was in the process of holding its weekly court sitting.
Traffic along the main street of the town was interrupted for a brief period of time as gardaí rushed to the scene.
Both men were remanded on continuing bail subject to strict conditions and are due to appear back before a sitting of Longford District Court next Tuesday.
