Edenderry is once again in mourning after the sad passing of local man and boxing referee Edward 'Star' Cummins.

Star was beloved in the town, by many involved in clubs and groups, as well as his neighbours in Rectory Meadows and formerly Fr Killian Cresent, Edenderry.

He died peacefully at home after a "long illness bravely borne," his family said.

One of Star's many friends, Liam 'Morley' Brereton paid a glowing tribute to him on Wednesday.

He said, "It's with great shock and sadness we learn about the passing of a friend and colleague, a great boxing man Edward Cummins (Star)."

He said Edward was "a long time pivotal member of St Brigid's Boxing Club Edenderry & Edenderry All-Female Sparring Camp."

He served as a referee, judge, club treasurer and committee member. He is also a former Leinster IABA Secretary.

"I don't think there is a position in boxing he didn’t hold - don’t know who I'll argue with now," Liam joked.

"Condolences to Evelyn Cummins, Sarah, David, John all your extended family friends and your big boxing family. RIP Eddie."

Other friends and locals were quick to share their memories and condolences of Star.

One read: "Sincere condolences to all Eddie’s family and boxing family in St Brigid's Boxing Club Edenderry on the passing of a true gentleman who will be sadly missed by all. Rest in peace my friend."

Another said: "Rest in peace, Star. You will be greatly missed."

A third added: "So sorry to hear of Eddie's passing, an absolute gentleman. Sincere condolences to his wife Evelyn and family. May he rest in peace."
