Residents in an estate in Tullamore are 'furious' as mounds of rubbish have been burning illegally at the end of their street.
As the pictures in the gallery above show, everything from televisions to shopping trolleys have been set alight in the fires sending toxic smoke and dangerous fumes into the atmosphere as well as scarring the local landscape.
The fires were set on Chancery Lane in Tullamore with bottles, plastics and cans left strewn across the area after the fires went out. One resident commented, "I pay to have my rubbish taken away but if these people can burn theirs at the end of my street and the council take away the remains for free, what's stopping me from doing the same. If I'm caught leaving my rubbish at the end of my Lane to be burnt by the same people burning rubbish the last few nights, will I get in trouble?"
Another resident described the 'mounds of rubbish and all sorts' that had been set alight.
Offaly County Council says it is investigating the matter. In a statement to the Offaly Express, the council stated: "The Environment Section is working with the Housing Section in dealing with this issue. When the complaint has been fully investigated, should there be evidence relating to any individual/s, the Council will take the appropriate and necessary action to deal with illegal dumping/burning under the Waste Management Act, 1996."
This latest incident follows on from last week when complaints were raised about similar fires burning on the Arden Road. READ MORE ON THAT STORY HERE
