As part of Centra’s #WeAreHurling campaign, Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Seán óg Ó hAilpín have chosen a hurling team they believe to be the best of the last 25 years.
Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh and Seán óg Ó hAilpín both picked their own teams, and then debated, argued and bargained their way to a combined 15.
That timeframe brings us from 1992, prior to two Offaly All-Ireland victories in 1994 and 1998, all the way through to 2017 when Joe Canning inspired Galway to All-Ireland success.
The sole Offaly man picked on the combined 15 after a debate between both Ó Muircheartaigh and Ó hAilpín was Brian Whelahan, a recent GAA Hall of Fame entrant.
The legendary Whelahan was selected at wing back on the combined selection. Ó hAilpín obviously fought to include him as he did not appear on Ó Muircheartaigh's team.
The team is dominated by Kilkenny and Cork who have five and four representatives respectively. Joe Canning is the sole Galway man on the team, while Tipperary, one of the most consistent teams over the last 25 years also have one representative in the shape of Eoin Kelly.
Here is the team selected by Ó Muircheartaigh and Ó hAilpín:
1) Dónal Óg Cusack (Cork)
2) J.J. Delaney (Kilkenny)
3) Brian Lohan (Clare)
4) Diarmuid O’Sullivan (Cork)
5) Tommy Walsh (Kilkenny)
6) Brian Corcoran (Cork)
7) Brian Whelahan (Offaly)
8) Ken McGrath (Waterford)
9) Ciarán Carey (Limerick)
10) Ben O’Connor (Cork)
11) Joe Canning (Galway)
12) D.J. Carey (Kilkenny)
13) Eoin Kelly (Tipperary)
14) Henry Shefflin (Kilkenny)
15) Eddie Brennan (Kilkenny)
