Offaly-based trad band Ruaile Buaile have paid tribute following the death of Michael Lynam Snr, the grandfather of band member Shane Lynam.

The Rahan Comhaltas legend passed away peacefully in the wonderful care of the staff of Westmeath Hospice earlier this week, and Ruaile Buaile fondly remembered the Ballycumber man as a huge influence on them.

"It is with great sadness that we have lost a fellow musician, inspiration, gentleman and role model," the band said in a statement.

"Michael was part of Rahan Comhaltas when we started out as young musicians. He always encouraged us and advised us when we were learning our craft and followed us throughout our time in the band."

"He found great joy in seeing young musicians playing their instruments. Anyone that knew Michael knows what a gentleman he was, he always had time for a chat. He was very proud of all his grandchildren and our man Shane," they continued.

"Michael could be found in any corner of any pub at any time playing the accordion throughout his lifetime. He will be sadly missed by us all."

The video at the top of this article shows Michael playing a jig with his son Michael and grandson Shane just before his 80th birthday last month.

"It's not too often you see three generations playing such great music," the band said.

His loved Rahan Comhaltas group also paid tribute to their beloved member, saying, "Words cannot even begin to express our sorrow for our great friend, teammate and a true gentleman. Our thoughts and prayers are with Michael's family at this time."

Michael will be sadly missed and always remembered by his loving wife Breda, daughter Catherine, son Michael, son-in-law Kevin, daughter-in-law Margaret, stepchildren Michelle, Majella, Padraig, Caroline and Andrew, grandchildren, grea- grandchildren, his sister Kay, nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.
