Blizzard like conditions in gale force winds cause country to shut down

Conditions are side this morning are extremely dangerous as strong winds and heavy snow are causing blizzard like conditions.

The strong winds are also causing the snow to drift in places which severe accumulations in places. Visibility is very poor and the strong winds are whipping up snow that is already lying on the ground.

The snow and strong winds will continue today across Munster, Leinster and parts of Connacht in strong easterly winds; scattered snow showers in the northwest of the country. Remaining cold with highest temperatures of -1 to 2 degrees.

The snow will continue overnight but it will become lighter and the northeasterly winds will ease back. Lowest temperatures of 0 to -3 degrees with sharp frost in many places.
