Offaly man excels at European Prison Service Cross Country Championships

Tullamore Harriers news
On Saturday, the 18th of October, Tullamore Harriers athlete Mick O’Brien represented the Irish Prison Service at the European Prison Service Cross Country Championships in Belfast, which was hosted by the Northern Ireland Prison Service.
The 10K race, consisting of four laps around the beautiful grounds of Stormont Estate, home to Northern Ireland’s main Parliament Buildings, took place on a perfect autumn morning, with ideal conditions for fast racing. Teams from 12 countries lined up at the start at 10am.
A native of Crinkle and living in Kinnitty, Mick settled into the chasing group before working his way through the field to finish an excellent 10th overall in a superb time of 36:05. This outstanding performance also earned him first place in the Over 45 category leading the Irish team to an excellent third place overall. Mick was supported by Rory Morrissey and Keith Coughlan of St. Michael’s AC, Declan Ryan of Roscommon Harriers and Graham Doyle of Dublin City Harriers.
Tom Godley Cross Country
With over one thousand students from more than fifty schools taking starters orders at the annual Tom Godley Cross Country, it was a busy morning in Spollanstown on Tuesday 13th of October. Despite blustery conditions and an early shower most of the athletes were able to compete in relatively good conditions. Over the ten races there were some fantastic individual performances with James Hynes and Annabel Donegan’s victories in the first year races an exciting start to the day.
Over the next hour all the races were fiercely contested with some very close finishes and while in the team competitions there were only a few points separating teams in several races. When the marks were totted up by our results team, the overall prizes had been won by Killeigh NS and Gaelscoil An Eiscir Riada.
The club is very grateful to all those who helped on the day and in preparation for the event. It would not be possible without their hard work.
