BISHOP of Meath Michael Smith blessed two new arrivals - a new peredus and bell - to the Church of St John the Baptist, Rath after confirmation in the parish on Friday, March 9.
Fr John Moorehead PP said that the bell was taken down for safety reasons to make room for the development of a car park in 1994.
He added, “There were bad timbers showing signs of their age and at that time I promised the community that the bell would be re-used, not sold. We have made good on this promise, by making a fine iron stand, made by Richard Watkins, a craftsman from the parish, and bringing the bell inside the vhurch.”
The Bishop also blessed a new peredus. Fr Moorehead explained, “When the church was being renovated in 1994, money was scarce, and I was aware that something needed to be done. I asked many times what we should do and we finally settled on a design of James Grennan, which the Parish Council all loved.
“We approached Brian Gath, local craftsman, to make a piece, tongue and grooved, in Walnut, Oak and Maple, supported on a marine ply base, to be suspended. Aidan Spain fitted the lights, again a skilled man from the parish.” Fr Moorehead concluded, “The parish received two bequests which allowed us to think on this scale and quality. Many thanks to those families.”
