FORÓIGE in Offaly has come on in leaps and bounds. Currently there are 27 clubs and cafés spread throughout the county.
Foróige is a youth organisation concerned with youth development and enabling young people to get involved in their communites. Clubs meet once a week for 1-2 hours in local community centres during the school term. The young people elect a committee made up of their peers to run the club with the encouragement and support of volunteers.
The Foróige clubs and cafés accept member’s 12- 18yrs. Activities include sports, drama, discos, quizzes, community projects and much much more.
There are clubs in Banagher, Ballinabrackey, Ballinagar, Ballinahown, Ballycumber, Birr, Cloghan, Croghan, Clonfert, Carrig & Riverstown, Clonbullogue, Durrow, Ferbane, Geashill, Kilcormac, Kinnity, Lusmagh, Mucklagh, Rath & Eglish, Rahan, Shinrone, Tubber, Walsh Island and Youth Cafés in Ferbane and Birr.
It was decided to raise money for two very worth causes – South West Offaly Special Olympics and Offaly Hospice. A disco was held in February and €932 was raised for the Special Olympics. An inter-county quiz with Westmeath was held in March and €300 was raised for OffalyHospice.
