late joe monahan
The legendary Joe Monahan passed to his eternal reward on Tuesday, June 19. For years he entertained the crowds at Fleadhs, concerts and gigs with quick wit, stories, yarns, jokes, dancing and even a song on a rare occasion.
He was not only an intricate part of a Rahan gig - much more than that, often putting in far more hours behind the scenes - attending meetings - organising fundraisers - building stages but more importantly he was a friend to everyone and always had time to talk, show concern, advise and encourage.
Joe was the glue that kept everything going in both good times and bad. He will be sorely missed by far more people than he would have realised. Our huge loss is heavens huge gain - so many stories and memories were exchanged over the last few days. Deepest and most sincere sympathies to Ita, Karen and Elaine.
Joe Monahan’s death shocked us all, but the people of the parish, Rahan Comhaltas, members of Scor, Shamrocks GAA and members Golf Clubs and other organisations united in a show of solidarity to ensure that Joe got a worthy send off. Thousands from all over Ireland visited Ross Road, Screggan for Joe’s wake.
The above organisations and clubs as well as teams of 1971/72 and the school children of St Colmans School formed guards of honour as Joe’s remains was carried to St Coleman’s Church Mucklagh for requiem mass.
