STUDENTS from Colaiste Iosagain recently qualified for the regional final of the Gael Linn national debating competition, Comórtas an Phiarsaigh 2012.
An excellent performance by the junior debating team from the students at a recent heat in their school clinched their place in the regional finals.
A team from Presentation Secondary School in Thurles was also chosen on the night to go through.
The topical motion debated was ‘Tá an tíre seo loite le hábharachas‘ (this country is ruined by materialism) and many arguments in it’s favour were put forward by the students.
The Port students defeated teams from the Cistercian College in Roscrea and Newbridge College in Kildare.
The Colaiste Iosagain team members (Fiona Ní Choileáin, Gillian Ní Dhálaigh and Jessica Wyse) were helped and directed in their preparation for the debate by teacher Christina Ní Shionnaigh, who was justifiably proud of her pupils. They are now looking forward to the challenge of the regional final, due to be held in early March.
Organiser Jamie Ó Tuama is from Gael Linn.
“The main aim of this national debating competition is to promote the use of Irish, while at the same time fostering skills in public speaking and debating among young people.
He continued saying that “It is very important that young people are able to articulate their ideas and opinions with confidence and the Portarlington students are well on their way to being good orators”.
