LOCAL TD Marcella Corcoran Kennedy, has praised the HSE and Offaly Community Forum for organising a week-long series of events to promote awareness of mental health.
The event, Offaly Mental Health TALK Week, consisted of a series of lectures, events and seminars at various locations around the county from September 10 to September 17, and culminated with a Family Fun Day entitled ‘Breaking the chains of mental illness stigma’ on Charleville Estate.
Deputy Corcoran Kennedy, who attended the fun day, described it as “a wonderful and very important event, which helped to put the focus on mental health issues in Offaly, but in a very positive and family-focussed manner.”
She added, “Any initiative which helps us to talk openly about the issue of suicide and mental health has to be warmly welcomed and as a society we need to talk openly about mental health issues and we need to acknowledge the pain and heartbreak of death by suicide.”
