BALLYCOMMON Canal Renewal Group are celebrating the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Ballycommon to Kilbeggan Branch of the Grand Canal on Sunday, July 31 next with a BBQ and family evening at Campbells Bridge, Ballycommon.
The bridge is 250 meters west of Ballycommon House Pub. There are various events throughout the day with boats leaving Daingean at 2.30pm approximately, arriving at Campbells Bridge for 5.30pm.
The BBQ will take place from 6pm with various activities for young and old taking place by the waters’ edge. Novice fishing lessons will be given from 2.30pm, registration is at the 21st Lock (Fishers).
Some equipment will be available on the day so don’t worry if you don’t have a rod.
Meanwhile, a Canal Bank Nature Walk will be hosted by none other than Éanna Ní Lamhna of ‘Mooney Goes Wild’ fame assembling at Ballycommon Church at 5pm and proceeding along the disused canal bank towards Cambells Bridge.
With the exception of the BBQ, all activities are free of charge. Canal Barge 107B will be in attendance on the day with an exhibition of various artefacts pertaining to canal life in the past.
There will be traditional music during the BBQ and the evening will round off with Ceol & Damhsa in Ballycommon House commencing at 9.30pm ‘till late. For further information please call Gerry on 087 7415210.
