“It’s all about our young scout members”.

So said Donnie Molloy leader of the 4th Laois Scout Group Portarlington after accepting the Children and Youth in Fun and Education at the Laois Community Award.

Running now for more than two decades - it celebrated 21 years in 2012 - the group provides an important outlet for young peole to learn through fun and educational activities year round.

With 120 youth members 15 adult, Mr Molloy says the group operates four nights a week at its own den on the Main Street.

Portarlington has grown rapidly in recent years which has led to an upsurge in the number of young people in the town who may not have local roots. The group leader believes that scouts can help give sense of belonging.

“It gets them out of their homes and involved more (in the community),” he said.

Mr Molloy was “delighted” with the win saying he was accepting it on behalf of young club members.
