THERE was a very good turn out to Brainwave’s Epilepsy Information Evening in Offaly Centre for Independent Living Tullamore on Wednesday last October 5. Margaret Bassett, Community Resource Officer for Brainwave The Irish Association Midland Region, opened the event by welcoming all.
Margaret then spoke briefly about Brainwave’s work in the region. Margaret introduced the main speaker for the evening Denise Cunningham who is a Clinical Epilepsy Nurse Specialist. Denise is one of only 5 Clinical Nurse Specialist in Epilepsy in Ireland. Denise gave a presentation on a general overview on epilepsy defining the condition and explaining the different types of epilepsy. Other areas covered were triggers for seizures, different treatments, lifestyle issues, and first aid.
People were given an opportunity to put questions to Denise and some interesting topics were raised eg driving regulations, women’s issues and educational support for students with epilepsy.
Margaret concluded the evening by thanking Denise for an interesting presentation and thanking people for attending. Margaret urged people to contact Brainwave for accurate information and continued support. Overall the information evening was a great success and the feedback was very positive.
