THE makers of Wednesday, the hit Netflix series starring Jenna Ortega, hailed the Irish locations as “truly magical” after filming at Charleville Castle in Tullamore, along with estates, a cemetery and castles in Dublin and Wicklow.

Co-showrunners and executive producers of the comedy mystery show Alfred Gough and Miles Millar said the locations, which included the 18th century castle in Tullamore (pictured below) were the perfect backdrop for the series.

Tourism Ireland said dramatic Irish landscapes can be seen on screen throughout the series, including Powerscourt Demesne in Enniskerry and the gothic Charleville Castle in Tullamore.

Tourism Ireland said of Charleville Castle: “Home of the King Oak (pictured below), it was also seen on screens in Becoming Jane and The Tudors.”

Deansgrange Cemetery in Dublin, the final resting place of former Taoiseach Seán Lemass and singer Sinéad O’Connor, was also used.

Alfred Gough and Miles Millar set the scene for series two of Wednesday.

“Wednesday, Season 1, was a table setter, but there’s still so much of the world left to see. It’s been exciting to expand the scope and the vision of the show this season,” executive producer Alfred Gough said.

Fellow co-creator Miles Millar agreed, saying, “We have a broader canvas and more toys to play with. The world of Nevermore is much expanded — and we had a great time doing it.”

Jenna Ortega leads the cast as the titular supernatural detective, Wednesday Addams, alongside regular cast members Isaac Ordonez (Pugsley) Catherine Zeta Jones (Morticia), Luis Guzmán (Gomez), Victor Dorobantu (Thing), Emma Myers (Enid Sinclair), Joy Sunday (Bianca Barclay), Moosa Mostafa (Eugene Ottinger), Georgie Farmer (Ajax), Dorobantu (Thing), and Hunter Doohan (Tyler Galpin).

New series regulars include Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper and appearances from Christopher Lloyd, Joanna Lumley and Thandiwe Newton. “Our goal this season was to discover some fresh faces as well as invite some acting legends we’ve always admired to join Jenna and the gang at Nevermore,” said Millar and Gough.

“This season, Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore,” said Gough and Millar.

The eerie world of Wednesday comes from Tim Burton, who continues his role as director and executive producer in Season 2. MGM Television is the studio behind Wednesday.

The first episode airs on Wednesday, August 6 while the second will be screened on Wednesday, September 3.

Wednesday is set in Nevermore Academy and Charleville Castle interiors are used in some scenes.

Ortega, 22, who plays a teenager, was quoted as saying: “I’d never been to Ireland and it was wonderful.”

The Californian actress added: “My favourite thing was just how kind the people are, but also the countryside was really nice. I did my best to see as much of the island as I could while I was there. I went north, south, east, west, I went all over. I’m pretty proud of myself.”
