The Cathaoirleach of Tullamore Municipal District has confirmed that work has commenced on repairing the traffic lights on Rahan Bridge in Offaly.

Councillor Declan Harvey says the fault has been found and the lights will be back up and running at the end of this week or early next week. The road will also be resurfaced.

''There was no need to bring in engineers from Italy. The work is being carried out by local crews,'' he said.

At the June meeting of Tullamore Municipal District, Councillors heard that an Italian controller installed the lights and he had passed away and it looked like an Italian crew would have to be brought in to fix the lights.

Director of Services Paul McLoughlin said at the same meeting that a solution would be found in the next couple of weeks. ''We are not going to let it run and run,'' he said.

The lights had been out of action for a long number of months and temporary lights were not suitable as they could not be linked up to the sensors on the road.
