Penneys Store in Laois Shopping Centre
For many years, a common refrain in Tullamore has been: if only Penneys came to town, it could breathe new life into the area.
Local frustration often targets the council and elected representatives, with scathing criticism frequently voiced across social media.
In response to growing public sentiment, the Tribune contacted Penneys directly to ask whether Tullamore is on their radar for a new store.
In a statement, the company said it is always exploring new opportunities and is pleased to hear of strong local interest. However, it added: ''We can't comment on speculation about where we might open next."
Globally, Penneys, known internationally as Primark, employs over 80,000 people across 17 countries in Europe and the US. The company, founded in Ireland in 1969 under the Penneys brand, now operates 460 stores worldwide and continues to expand, according to its website.
Despite its expansion, Primark recently announced plans to cut 150 jobs across Ireland, the UK, and the US. The bulk of these -100 positions, will be lost at the company's Dublin head office, affecting roles in finance, HR, and procurement.
It is understood that there is a proposal to relocate some support functions as part of this restructuring.
