JUDGE Andrew Cody dismissed what he called a “cock and bull” story and imposed a large fine during the May 14 sitting of Tullamore District Court.
Nazar Kovalchuk, Room 254, Deerpark Hotel, Howth, Dublin pleaded guilty to having no insurance and no driving licence in Clonmullen, Edenderry on October 14, 2024.
The defending solicitor Aisling Maloney told the court that her client had driven from Dublin “to collect his friend who had had too much to drink and needed to be driven home. It was the act of a good Samaritan.”
“How stupid does your client think I am?” asked the Judge. “This is obviously a cock and bull story and it is insulting to this court to put forward such a story.”
He convicted and fined €2,000 for no insurance and disqualified from driving for five years. He fined €200 for the driving licence offence and €250 for failing to produce an NCT certificate.
