Tackling derelict properties in towns across Offaly is a top priority for the Green's Liam Walsh
Bringing derelict and vacant properties back in to use as residential accommodation will be a top priority for the Green Party's Liam Walsh if elected to Offaly County Council
Green Party candidate in the Tullamore Municipal District for the local elections Liam Walsh says bringing derelict and vacant properties back in to use as residential accommodation will be a top priority for him if elected to Offaly County Council in the upcoming local elections.
In a statement issued this week Mr. Walsh stated that reviving derelict buildings in both Tullamore and Clara towns can bring a multitude of benefits to the local communities, the most immediate one being the increase in the supply of desperately needed housing for families.
In addition he stated that bringing additional families to live in the centre of both towns will help greatly to rejuvenate the commercial heart of the towns. He highlights the Government’s “Town Centre First” policy which prioritizes the development and rejuvenation of town centres.
This policy recognises that town centres have to an extent been hollowed out by the emergence of “out of town” shopping complexes all over the country.
Mr. Walsh emphasised that in the case of Tullamore the out of town commercial shopping developments were necessary and beneficial but resulted in an increase in the number of properties in the centre of the town becoming vacant and falling into dereliction.
Through this town centre first policy Mr. Walsh says the Government seeks to create thriving town centres that serve as the heart of local life and he states that if elected as a local representative he will strive to ensure that Offaly County Council are proactive in promoting the repurposing of these derelict and vacant town centre properties for residential use.
Mr. Walsh concluded by emphasising that repurposing derelict and vacant buildings in the two towns promotes environmental sustainability by preserving existing resources and enabling more sustainable living and thus he states the two towns can greatly enhance their commercial vibrancy as well as assisting in addressing the housing crisis.
