Lowry endures tough start to US PGA Championship
Offaly's Shane Lowry is well out of contention at the US PGA Championship after shooting a five over par round of 75 at Bethpage Black.
Lowry is languishing in 112th place and is in serious danger of missing the cut for the second major in a row, having endured similar difficulties at the US Masters at Augusta in April.
He is 12 shots behind the leader, last year's winner Brooks Koepka.
Starting on the 10th hole, Lowry made a solid enough start with three pars and a birdie in his opening for holes.
It soon went the other way as three bogeys before the turn put the Clara man in serious strife and scrambling for birdies.
He found just one more birdie on his back nine but that was accompanied by four more bogeys to leave him on five over par heading into this evening's second round.
