Star forward walks away from Offaly football panel

Nigel Dunne

Offaly GAA has confirmed that star forward Nigel Dunne has left the Offaly senior football panel.

Shamrocks man Dunne, the Offaly Senior B footballer of the year from 2018, has left the set-up with a difference of opinion with manager John Maughan the reported reason.

Dunne has been used only as a substitute by Maughan in the county's league campaign to date, most notably scoring two late points in a crucial win over Carlow last weekend.

A source within Offaly GAA told the Offaly Express: "Nigel made his own decision to leave the Offaly Senior Football Panel. The door is open for Nigel to be back at training tonight [Thursday]."

The player is not expected to return to the panel for training tonight and will not, therefore, be part of John Maughan's plans for this weekend's away clash with Down.

The exact nature of the dispute between the Mayo native and Nigel Dunne is unclear at this stage.
