Offaly girls make history for their school in rugby debut

The Gallen Community School senior girls rugby team created a bit of sporting history this week by becoming the first girls team to represent the Ferbane school in the sport.

Despite losing to Ardscoil Mhuire Ballinasloe in the game itself, the girls gave a good account of themselves and will benefit from the experience.

They have further games coming up against The Convent Roscommon, Sacred Heart Westport and Athlone CC.

The girls first honed their rugby skills at West Offaly Lions where they won a Leinster title.

Three of the players on the team, Zoe Tighe, Aoibhe Kelly and Siobhan McKenna, have been selected for the Leinster U18s.

The panel vs Ballinasloe: Rosanna Egan, Zoe Tighe, Katie Newman, Jenny Darcy, Chloe Daly, Sophie Loonam, Abaigeal Connon, Jane Egan, Siobhan McKenna, Shauna McGovern, Therese Lyons, Ella Hogan, Emma Bracken, Chiara Rotelli, Kira Hackett, Niamh Byrne, Rachel Bracken, Aoibhe Kelly, Aimee Kelly and Megan Murray.
