Lowry just six off the lead at US Open
Shane Lowry is just six shots off the lead after the first round of an incredibly difficult US Open at Shinnecock Hills, New York.
Birdies were hard to come by for the entire field with the lead currently held by a group of four, including world number one Dustin Johnson, at just one under par.
Lowry started his round on Thursday quite well with two pars, but a bogey on the third was an early setback. To the Clara man's credit, he bounced back with the first of three birdies on the fourth.
A bogey followed on the 5th but a string of five pars seemed to steady his challenge. He bogeyed the 11th but made the shot back with a birdie on the next, but midway through the back 9, things started to go wrong.
He triple-bogeyed the 13th and bogeyed the 14th in a turbulent couple of holes. A birdie on 15 and bogey on 17 summed up the Esker Hills man's up and down round.
He is currently comfortably inside the top 50 and is within three shots of the Top 10. He tees off on his second round at 1.24pm (Irish time) on Friday.
