Lowry endures disastrous opening round at Players Championship
Shane Lowry slumped to a three over par round of 75 at the Players Championship at the TPC Sawgrass course in Florida on Thursday evening.
Having started at the 10th hole, the Clara man got off to a wonderful start with two pars followed by two birdies at the 12th and 13th holes.
He hit the water on the next hole and eventually walked off the green with a double-bogey, cancelling out his good early work. He was in the water again on the famous island 17th, and once again came away with a double-bogey.
He birdied the second hole, his 11th, but a bogey on the Par 4 7th and the Par 5 9th saw him tail off to the poor round of 75, putting him nine shots off the leaders and languishing in a share of 108th spot.
Lowry will need a big round to avoid missing the cut when he tees off on his second round at 1.38pm (Irish time) on Friday.
