Offaly's U17 hurlers got the group phase of their Celtic Challenge campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable win over neighbours Laois on Wednesday evening, May 2.

Led by eventual man of the match, Shinrone's Peter Cleary from centre-back, Offaly took the lion's share of the scores, although in wet conditions in Birr, those scores were hard to come by.

Offaly handled the conditions better and led by 0-6 to 0-2 at the break. They continued to assert in the second half and managed to increase their tally to 0-11.

Laois could only add three further points in a tussle that can only be described as an arm wrestle, and both teams will be involved in better games as this national competition wears on over the summer.
