Shane Lowry in contention after first round of Honda Classic

Offaly golfer Shane Lowry battled back from four bogeys to sign for a one over par round of 71 at the Honda Classic at Palm Beach Gardens.

Lowry made a solid start under the Florida sun with a birdie on the third hole after two pars. Another couple of pars settled him well inside the Top 20, but a bogey at the 6th set him back to even par.

He remained at level par to the turn where his round then took a tumultuous course. He hit back to back bogeys on 11 and 12, before fighting back spectacularly to collect back to back birdies on 13 and 14.

That brought him back into the Top 20 at even par, but a late bogey saw him fall back to a share of 36th place. He is still just five shots off the lead currently held by Swede Alex Noren and American Webb Simpson.

Lowry tees off on his second round at 5.25pm (Irish time) on Friday evening.
