Lowry off the pace at Genesis Open on PGA Tour
Offaly golfer Shane Lowry's disappointment after last week's final round at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am continued on Thursday as he slumped to a two over par opening round of 73 at the Genesis Open.
Needing a top-two finished to qualify for the upcoming WGC event in Mexico, Lowry picked up a birdie on the opening hole, and a series of five pars after that point signalled the beginning of a strong tournament.
However, the Clara man then hit back to back bogeys before making the turn at one over par. A couple of pars were once again overshadowed by a bogey on the Par 5 11th hole, bring him to two over par.
He fought back and birdied the next hole, but recorded another bogey at 14 to sign for a two over par round of 73. He lies in joint 88th and in danger of missing the cut, seven behind joint leaders Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau.
Lowry tees off on his second round on Friday evening at 8.12pm (Irish time).
