Shane Lowry handed early tee time for first tournament of the year

Shane Lowry and Tiger Woods to return to action on PGA Tour

Offaly's Shane Lowry has been handed a 9.40am tee time (5.40pm Irish time) for his first tournament of the year at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego this week.

The Clara man will play alongside South Korean K.J Choi and American Bryson DeChambeau on Thursday as he aims to get 2018 off to a positive start

Lowry enjoyed a couple of good performances at the tail end of last season, kicking off last last August when he finished 7th at the Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour.

In 11 European starts last season, the Clara man missed the cut on two occasions, but didn't finish outside the Top 30 in any of the other nine tournaments.

He was 7th in the British Masters in September, 8th in the Turkish Open in November and 12th at the Nedbank Golf Challenge just a week later. He finished out the year alongside fellow Irish man Graeme McDowell at the DP World Tour event in Dubai where the pair finished in 2nd place.

Meanwhile, 14-time Major winner Tiger Woods makes yet another return to action after lengthy spells out with injury. His last PGA Tour start came at Torrey Pines in this tournament last year where he missed the cut. He has won the Farmers Insurance Open seven times and added an eighth victory at the venue when landing the 2008 US Open.

Woods tees off an hour later than Lowry and will play alongside two fellow Americans, Charley Hoffman and Patrick Reed.

In the betting, Shane Lowry is priced at 50/1 in the outright market, while Tiger Woods is 22/1 with most bookmakers. Spain's Jon Rahm is the clear tournament favourite at 8/1.

The Farmers Insurance Open tees off on Thursday, January 25. Stay up to speed on Shane Lowry's progress right here at
