Offaly Olympians off to Athens

THREE Offaly Olympians are off to Greece this week as part of Team Ireland for the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

THREE Offaly Olympians are off to Greece this week as part of Team Ireland for the 2011 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Gary McCabe from Clara, Patrick Moore from Croghan and John Michael Gannon from Cloghan will represent their county and their country with pride at the event which takes place from June 25 to July 4 in Athens.

Rody Spillane from Birr will also travel with the Irish party as a coach and chaperone with the football team.

A total of 124 athletes will be part of Team Ireland which is sponsored by eircom.

Gary McCabe is part of the basketball team, Patrick Moore is part of the football team while John Michael Gannon will compete in Artistic Gymnastics.

The ethos and creed of the Special Olympics Movement is encapsulated by their oath; “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
