How Mohamed Salah equalled Premier League record for combined goals and assists

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah equalled a Premier League record with 47 combined goals and assists this season following his final-day strike against Crystal Palace.

Here, the PA news agency takes a look at how Salah matched a mark dating from the 42-game era.

Salah’s season

Salah scored 29 league goals and added 18 assists in the best season of his illustrious career, one played out against the backdrop of ultimately successful contract talks.

His goals tally included doubles against Southampton twice, Newcastle, Tottenham and Bournemouth as he scored in 24 of his 38 appearances – with his tally surprisingly not including any hat-tricks.

He had two assists in a game on three occasions, including the same 6-3 win at Tottenham, and led both the Premier League Golden Boot standings and the assists chart by six.

Across all competitions, he recorded 34 goals and 23 assists for a combined total of 57.

It was Salah’s fourth Golden Boot, matching Thierry Henry’s record, and he stands fifth on the all-time list of Premier League goalscorers with 186, one behind fourth-placed Andy Cole.

Record return

The record for goal involvements was previously set in the early seasons of the Premier League era, featuring 22 teams and therefore 42 games each.

Both Cole in 1993-94 and Alan Shearer the following season scored 34 goals and added 13 assists for a total of 47, now matched by Salah in 38 matches.

Salah’s previous best tally came in his first Anfield season, 2017-18, with 32 goals and 10 assists.

He joins only Cole in 1993-94 and Tottenham’s Harry Kane in 2020-21 in having led the league outright in both categories. Salah shared the 2021-22 Golden Boot with Spurs’ Son Heung-min while topping the assists chart, while Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was joint top of both lists for Leeds in 1998-99.
