THREE of the four Offaly powerlifters who travelled to Limerick last weekend for the GPC Irish Championships returned home with National titles while the fourth also qualified for the Irish team which will compete in the World Championships which take place in Ireland later in the year.
Leading the way was Ferbane’s Benny Dermody who set four Irish records in his category on his way to victory. Subject to ratification by the governing body later this week, all four lifts were also world records.
He lifted 200kg in the squat, 120kg in the bench press and 210kg in the dead-lift, a combined total of 530kg or roughly 84 stone.
Rory Clarke also set four national records on his way to a national title and a place on the Irish team in his division.
Billy Meehan set three national records on his way to victory in the squat (320kg), dead-lift (270kg) and total which including the bench press amounted to 740kg, equivalent to 117 stone.
The fourth Offaly lifter at the event was Maxims Selikis who set a new national record in the bench of 205kg on his way to making the Irish team.
