Tullamore firsts dig deep to take all 5 points at home to Wexford Wanderers

Karl Dunne and Kalvin Mahon run out to a guard of honour from the Tullamore Minis on Saturday.

Leinster League Division 1A: Tullamore 37 – 10 Wexford Wanderers

Tullamore entered Saturday’s clash knowing a win was essential to back up last week’s dominant performance against Suttonians. However, they were forced to settle quickly after a sharp early snipe from the Wanderers winger, followed by a successful conversion that put the visitors 7–0 ahead. Despite the setback, Tullamore steadied the ship and began to impose themselves on the contest. Sustained pressure earned a penalty deep in Wanderers territory, and the hosts opted for the corner. Marty Cummins rose superbly to secure the lineout before a clever trick play unfolded. Colm Heffernan swept in from the blindside, burrowing through a narrow gap to set the platform. Barry Bracken, arriving at pace, powered over the line for Tullamore’s opening try. Conor Dunne added the conversion to level the tie. On a wet and slippery day, both sides struggled for continuity. Penalties were traded as conditions dictated a scrappy tempo, and while Tullamore created several promising opportunities, they failed to convert them, leaving Wanderers firmly in touch at the break.

The second half began much as the first ended, with Dunne nudging over a penalty on 43 minutes to give Tullamore a narrow three-point lead. The game then burst into life on 55 minutes. Slick hands from Ciaran Ennis and Sean McCabe carved a path deep into the Wanderers 22. Sam Burns fired a pinpoint pass to substitute Scott Bradley, who attacked his opposite man and caused chaos in the defensive line. Burns recycled quickly, releasing Cathal Farrell into space, and the winger needed no second invitation as he sprinted clear for a superb breakaway try.
Momentum swung decisively. With Tullamore now playing with confidence and control, another penalty allowed them to set up camp near the Wanderers line. Powerful carries from Bracken, Kalvin Mahon, and substitute John Dunican softened the defence before Adam Carthy crashed over for Tullamore’s third try. Dunne converted and immediately marshalled the side in search of the crucial fourth.
Despite the conditions, Tullamore showed real ambition and attacking flair. Their persistence paid off when Heffernan – influential throughout – blasted through for the bonus-point try. From the restart, the home side struck again. Sharp interplay and crisp hands opened space for Farrell, who dotted down for his second and Tullamore’s fifth of the afternoon.
The final whistle confirmed a 37–10 victory. While the match was at times scrappy, Tullamore showed grit, patience, and ambition to secure a valuable bonus-point win. They sit third heading into the Christmas break and will be eager to push on when the league resumes in the new year.
**Player of the Match:** *Scott Bradley* – His second-half impact was immense, showing bravery in defence and steel in attack, helping drive Tullamore over the line.
